Köpenhamn

Tid: fredag 20 n ovember kl. 14.00-16.00
Plats: Danish Institute for International Studies, Main Auditorium
Arrangör: The Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS)

"Background

One of the most direct ways in which migrants and refugees influence their countries of origin is through the sending of remittances. On a global scale, remittances exceed overseas development assistance and equal foreign direct investments. The magnitude of remittance flows has created a sense of euphoria within the development community where they have been celebrated as the new magic bullet for development. However, as a result of the financial crisis, much of the optimism surrounding remittances has been challenged. Today, there is growing concern that remittance flows will decrease as a result of increasing unemployment rates and return migration among migrants and refugees. However, empirical data on the links between the financial crisis, remittance practices and migration trends is still scarce. This DIIS seminar presents new findings on the ways in which the financial crisis affects migration and remittance flows from the U.S., Spain and Italy and thereby helps fill an important empirical gap.

Manuel Orozco is Senior Associate and Director of Remittances and Development at the Inter-American Dialogue. He has conducted extensive research, policy analysis and advocacy on issues relating to global flows of remittances and migration and development worldwide. He is chair of Central America and the Caribbean at the U.S. Foreign Service Institute. He is also Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University, where he is Senior Researcher at the Institute for the Study of International Migration. He frequently testifies before Congress and has spoken before the United Nations. Manuel Orozco has published widely on Remittances, Latin America, Globalization, Democracy, Migration, Conflict in war-torn Societies, and Minority Politics. His books include Remittances: Global Opportunities for International Person-to-Person Money Transfers (Lafferty; 2005) and International Norms and Mobilization for Democracy (Ashgate; 2002).
