"At the conference, the city of Rotterdam will present its views on the impact and effects of the ‘Kansenzones’ initiative on the local community and economic policy in the Rotterdam metropolitan area. By demonstrating its success and the comparison with similar initiatives on the European stage, the city council of Rotterdam will put the initiative in an international perspective.


As little as four years ago the phrase ‘economic opportunity’ was not the first thing that came to mind when talking about Rotterdam-Zuid, the part of Rotterdam south of the river Maas. These days however, many hundreds of (starting) entrepreneurs and owners of commercial real estate invested tens of millions euros extra in their businesses and properties. This is only one of the results of the ‘Kansenzones’ initiative, also known as Economic Opportunity Zones. Because of the ‘Kansenzones’ initiative, entrepreneurs who choose to start their venture in one of the eleven selected neighbourhoods, qualify for financial incentives. The city of Rotterdam is very proud of the results the programme has achieved over the past four years and intends to continue the programme in years to come. Among the indicators of the initiative’s success are an increase in entrepreneurial activity, consumer satisfaction and new jobs and increased investment in the targeted neighbourhoods."
